Ice and Dilution: What Changes in a Poured Drink

Two glasses showing a chilled drink before and after ice begins to melt.

Ice and added water can change a drink’s temperature, volume, and perceived flavor. They do not remove the THC already present in the product you poured.

Keep the original amount in view

If you pour a measured labeled portion into a glass and add plain water, the total amount of THC added remains the amount in that original portion. The finished volume is larger. This is a distinction between total amount and concentration, not a serving recommendation.

Do not assume that an improvised shared pitcher divides a product evenly among glasses. Follow the manufacturer’s preparation and measuring instructions, and avoid using the apparent weakness of a flavor as a guide to cannabinoid content.

Record the preparation clearly

For a product intended to be mixed, keep the package available and identify the finished drink. Use the specified measurement for the product itself before adding the recommended liquid.

  • Measure the product as directed.
  • Keep total THC separate from total liquid volume.
  • Do not infer an amount from taste.
  • Keep each finished drink clearly identified.
